Do you actually need a VPN?

A VPN encrypts your internet traffic and hides your location. That is genuinely useful in some situations and completely unnecessary in others. Here is the honest version.

A VPN is only one layer. Pair it with sensible antivirus protection and the safe-browsing habits in our Knowledge Hub. If something already slipped through, we handle virus & malware removal at the shop.

When a VPN helps

  • Using public Wi-Fi at a coffee shop, hotel, airport, or campus building.
  • Keeping your internet provider from logging every site you visit.
  • Reaching your home region's streaming library or services while traveling.
  • Adding privacy on a shared or family network.

What it will not do

  • It will not remove a virus or stop malware you download yourself.
  • It will not make you anonymous when you are signed in to your accounts.
  • It will not fix slow internet — most VPNs make a connection slightly slower.
  • A free VPN often pays for itself by selling your browsing data.

If you decide you want one, look for a paid provider with a clear no-logs policy and apps for every device you own. We are happy to help you set it up on your computer, phone, or router — and we will tell you if we think you do not need it.
