Things we tell customers at the counter every week. No sign-up, no catch — if one of these saves you a repair bill, that is a win for us too.

Step-by-step guides and talks you can watch at your own pace.

Speed up a slow computer

  • Restart it. A full shutdown once a week clears more problems than any cleaner app.
  • Trim startup programs in Task Manager — anything you do not use daily can be disabled.
  • Leave at least 15% of your drive free; a full drive slows Windows to a crawl.
  • If it is still slow and still spinning a hard drive, an SSD upgrade is the single biggest improvement you can make.

Protect your files

  • Keep two copies in two places: one cloud (OneDrive, Google Drive, iCloud) and one external drive.
  • Test a backup by actually opening a file from it. An untested backup is a guess.
  • If a drive starts clicking or freezing, power it off and bring it in. Running it can make recovery harder.

Avoid scams

  • No real company calls to tell you your computer has a virus. Hang up.
  • Never let a stranger remote into your computer, and never pay in gift cards.
  • Type website addresses yourself instead of clicking links in unexpected emails.
  • When in doubt, call us before you click. We would rather answer a question than clean up after one.

Everyday laptop care

  • Use it on a hard surface so the vents stay clear, and blow dust out of the fans a couple times a year.
  • Carry it closed, and never by the screen.
  • Keep drinks off the same table. Liquid is the fastest way to total a laptop.
  • Install Windows updates when prompted instead of postponing them for months.
